Guidance notes for Trainees:

For the duration of your Initial Teacher Training programme you will compile evidence against each of the Teachers' Standards (2012) to prove that you have met the requirements in full.

This portfolio is designed to enable you to compile an ongoing log of evidence against each of the Teachers' Standards and enable you to acheive QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)

In addition to evidence stored electronically, you will also have materials which are available only in hard copy which could be used as evidence against the Standards. Such hard copy evidence should be stored in an

Additional Standards Evidence File (ASEF) to make these easily accessible for review purposes.

Guidance for completion

For each of the standards, aim towards providing a minimum of three pieces of evidence for each placement.

Each time you record evidence against one or more of the QTS Standards please ensure you do the following:

1. Record the date.

2.  Upload evidence, this could include (but not be limited to) lesson plans, feedback from mentors/observers, resources that you used or developed, staff development sessions, parents evenings, extra-curricular activities, assignments and research.

Evidence may also be entered as hyperlinks to websites or as references to the location of hard copy evidence stored in the Additional Standards Evidence File (ASEF).

3.  Include a reflection on how that experience will influence your future professional practice.

Quality of evidence

The quality of your evidence for each of the Teachers’ Standards is crucial. Be selective about the evidence you decide to include in your portfolio, choosing that which best demonstrates your achievements and abilities.

Evidence can and should be cited both from placement-based experiences and university-based aspects of your training (subject and RPP sessions).

It is also important that your evidence reflects your progress over a period of time. Ensure that you record evidence which reflects various stages of your training (rather than say just over a few days or one week).

You will find that, as your professional skills develop through practice, so your evidence will become more wide ranging and more meaningful. It is in your best interests to replace any weaker examples of evidence with more substantial and significant ones as you progress – at the end of the programme, the evidence you submit should represent the best of your experiences and achievements.

Review and assessment of your portfolio

Your portfolio will be reviewed by your Tutor at various points throughout your training.

In addition to the formal review points at end of placement, your tutor may access it remotely to review progress and leave comments to support the further development of your portfolio of evidence.
